The UK has been struggling to find its support in the renewable energy world. Due to its location, solar energy hardly gets the attention that it needs to skyrocket the UK up to being a world leader in that field. Thus, a lot of people have been turning to wind energy, but there are still a number of countries that have more room that could easily overtake the UK in terms of wind power. So what does that leave? Apparently, it leaves tidal power.

According to reports, the UK is looking forward to becoming the world leader of tidal power. This is something that could be possible thanks to all the coastlines the UK enjoys. The Carbon Trust already says that Britain’s tidal and wave power could be worth £76 billion by 2050.

Right now, the UK just so happens to be home to about 35 of the world’s 120 to 130 wave and tidal energy developers. Due to this, the government will now be called on to increase its support for tidal power.

Just this Monday, the Commons’ Energy and Climate Change Committee reported on the future of marine renewables. They claim that the UK could actually become a leader of wave and tidal power. However, this is only possible if the UK government adopts a more visionary approach to developing marine energy.

Of course, the government knows how great marine power could be for the UK. In fact, they have already recognized that marine power could provide up to 27GW of capacity by 2050. A lot of the machines that would generate such power are expected to be deployed after 2020.
