New prime minister says he would look into building new reactors, breaking a campaign pledge.
After a campaign where he promised to move Japan away from nuclear power, the country’s new prime minister says he would look to build nuclear reactors, according to a report in the New York Times.
“They will be completely different from those at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant,” Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told the national television network TBS.
The possibility of building new nuclear power plants has been a sensitive issue in Japan since meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi plant forced more than 100,000 to leave their homes after an earthquake.
Japan’s previous prime minister had promised to phase out nuclear power by 2040.
